We examined lyrical quality, ingenuity, consistency, number of notable songs, critical reception, and legacy — the impact that every work had on BTS’ own career and the music industry — while rating the group’s four studio albums and two compilation albums.
This list only includes the group’s Korean albums. EPs, single albums, and albums re-recorded in different languages were not taken into account.
1. Dark & Wild
Although “Dark and Wild” came in last on this list, it was a strong showing for the band’s first full-length album.
It has the same hip-hop approach as their early single albums and EPs, with a rap line — RM, J-Hope, and Suga — who could spit quality bars from the start.
“Dark and Wild” isn’t as well-crafted or polished as the group’s later albums, and it lacks the group’s passion.

2. Love Yourself: Tear
BTS’ “Love Yourself: Tear” is the third episode in the “Love Yourself” series, and it focuses on the darker aspects of love. “Tear,” a tight 11-song bundle, is one of the group’s smallest studio albums, and it makes the most of its brevity.
The sequencing is flawless, despite some outstanding genre-shifting throughout the record. It begins with “Singularity,” a simmering neo-soul introduction by V, before moving on to the lead song “Fake Love,” which laments the difficulties of attempting to turn yourself for love.

3. Map of the Soul: 7
The fact that “Map of the Soul: 7” is near the bottom of this list demonstrates how diverse BTS’ discography is.
Prior to “Be,” the group’s most personal record, “Map of the Soul: 7,” used Jungian psychology to investigate the self. “7” is a wild adventure that doesn’t feel quite as unified as some of the group’s earlier albums, using selections from their 2019 EP “Map of the Soul: Persona” as a five-track introduction.

4. Wings
BTS’ “Wings” took them to new heights.
Thematically, it is influenced by books such as Herman Hesse’s “Demian.” It’s a musical success that lives up to the title’s lofty promise.
For the first (but certainly not the last) time in BTS’ discography, each of the seven members has a solo track. They build a unified picture as a group, giving “Wings” one of the most moving emotional arcs in their discography.

5. Love Yourself: Answer
“Love Yourself: Answer” is a big repackage album that includes selections from “Love Yourself: Her” and “Love Yourself: Tear,” as well as nine new compositions (plus four remixes). It’s still considered one of the group’s biggest pop successes.
Thematically tying the trilogy together through another full set of solo tracks and “Idol,” a self-love anthem that had stadiums of people chanting “you can’t stop me loving myself,” “Answer” is the end of the trilogy focused on various kinds of love.

6. Young Forever
“The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever,” which included songs from the group’s “Most Beautiful Moment in Life” EPs as well as several new songs, was a turning point in BTS’ career, with the group winning their first Korean music event.
At the 2016 Melon Music Awards, the album earned the group their first daesang — one of the most prestigious awards given out at the end of the year award show — for album of the year.
